History of Aromatherapy to Today

July 3rd, 2007 · No Comments

The art of Aromatherapy dates back to around 5500BC, where it was practised by the ancient Romans, Greeks, Egyptians, Chinese and Indians. These ancient civilisations knew the healing properties of these plants and used them in their bathing rituals and domestic practises.

The use of plant extracts continued through the centuries, up until the 1800’s. However, with scientific advancements, synthetic counterparts soon replaced the natural remedies.

It was not until the early 1900’s, a French chemist and perfumer, named Gattefosse, researched the scientific properties of the essential oils and coined the term “aromatherapie”. Through an incident of burning his hand, and placing it in a vat of pure essential oil, he found the healing properties inherent in Lavender.

The normal healing process was accelerated beyond belief. This prompted him to research the properties of the essential oils and develop the field of aromatherapy, as we know it today.

Today aromatherapy is being used in hospitals and nursing homes throughout and the Southern Hemisphere. It is becoming a popular Natural Therapy where people are learning to take more control over their health.
