The essential oils are best used for external application – directly to the skin as in a massage or by inhalation. Through both of these means essential oils gain access to the body, and then enter the blood stream and the tissues, where they then have their gentle effect on the body.
Essential oils are not to be taken internally as they are very concentrated. The oils enter and leave the body with great efficiency, leaving no toxins behind. As far as we know they are excreted through the urine, faeces, perspiration and exhalation.
It takes only a few seconds for the oils to reach the brain through inhalation. However, if the oils are applied to the skin, their action begins within 20 minutes. Research has shown that any trace of essential oils inhaled into the body was removed in 3 hours.
